Performance supplements for every stage of training

Performance supplements cover a wide range of products designed to fit around training, sport and active lifestyles. Some are used before a session for energy and focus, others during training for hydration or endurance, and some are chosen as part of post-workout nutrition and recovery.

The right product depends less on what's most popular and more on what you actually want help with. Start with the part of your training routine you want to support, then narrow things down by ingredients, format and how you prefer to use it.

Shop by training need

Energy & focus Pre-workout and stimulant-based formulas for sessions where alertness, concentration and getting mentally switched on matter.
Hydration Electrolyte powders, tablets and drinks for keeping fluids and key minerals topped up around training, sport and active days.
Endurance & intra-workout Products used during longer or more demanding sessions, including carbohydrate, amino-acid and hydration formulas.
Recovery & nutrition Products that fit around post-training nutrition, including protein, amino acids and other supplements used as part of a wider recovery routine.

How to choose performance supplements

Start with the job you want the product to do

A pre-workout, hydration tablet and amino-acid drink are all performance supplements, but they serve very different purposes. Decide whether you're looking for something before, during or after training and the choice becomes much clearer.

Energy isn't the same as performance

Some products use caffeine for alertness and concentration, while others focus on hydration, carbohydrate, amino acids or other training-related ingredients. Don't assume the strongest stimulant formula is automatically the best fit for your session.

Think about session length

A short gym session may need little more than water and your normal nutrition, while long or high-volume sessions can make hydration, electrolytes and carbohydrate intake more relevant. Match the product to the demands of the session.

Choose a format that fits your routine

Powders work well when you're happy to mix a drink, tablets and capsules are easy to carry, and ready-to-drink products are convenient when you're travelling or heading straight to training.

Look for overlap between products

If you already use pre-workout, creatine, amino acids or an energy drink, check whether a new supplement contains the same ingredients. This is especially important with caffeine and multi-ingredient formulas.

Build around the basics

Performance supplements work best as part of a routine that already includes appropriate food, fluid, sleep and training. They can make certain parts of that routine easier or more convenient, but they shouldn't replace the fundamentals.

Before, during or after training?

Before training

Pre-workout products are the obvious choice here, particularly if you're looking for caffeine, alertness or a pump-focused formula. Stimulant-free options can make more sense for evening training or if you already consume plenty of caffeine elsewhere.

During training

Intra-workout products are designed to be used while you train. Depending on the session, this can include electrolytes, carbohydrate drinks, amino acids or simply water. Longer and more demanding sessions usually make this category more relevant.

After training

Post-workout nutrition is usually centred on food, fluids and protein rather than a single magic supplement. Protein powders, amino acids and other convenient products can make it easier to fit that nutrition around a busy day.

On rest days

Not every performance supplement is tied to a workout window. Products such as creatine are commonly used consistently, including on rest days, while others only make sense around training. Follow the directions for the individual product.

Good to know: Performance supplements are a broad category, so there is no single “best” product. Choose based on your training goal, session type and existing routine, and check caffeine or overlapping ingredients if you already use more than one supplement.

Performance supplement questions

What are performance supplements?

Performance supplements are products used around sport and training, including pre-workouts, hydration products, amino acids, carbohydrate formulas and other sports nutrition supplements. They can be designed for use before, during or after exercise depending on the product.

Do all performance supplements contain caffeine?

No. Caffeine is common in many pre-workouts and energy-focused products, but hydration supplements, amino acids, creatine and many intra-workout formulas can be completely caffeine-free.

What should I take before training?

That depends on what you're looking for. A caffeinated pre-workout may appeal if alertness and concentration are priorities, while a stimulant-free pump formula can suit people who want to avoid caffeine. Food and hydration before training can be just as important.

What should I drink during a workout?

For many shorter sessions, water may be all you need. Longer, hotter or more demanding training can make carbohydrate and electrolyte drinks more useful depending on your individual needs and overall nutrition.

What are intra-workout supplements?

Intra-workout supplements are designed to be consumed during training. Common examples include electrolyte drinks, carbohydrate powders and amino-acid formulas. They are most relevant when the length or intensity of the session makes drinking or fuelling during exercise useful.

Can beginners use performance supplements?

Yes, but being a beginner doesn't mean you need lots of supplements. Start with a clear reason for using a product and keep the basics of nutrition, hydration and training in place first.

Can I use several performance supplements together?

Sometimes, but check the ingredients first. Products can overlap, particularly with caffeine, creatine, amino acids and vitamins. Knowing what's already in your routine helps avoid unnecessarily doubling up.

Are performance supplements only for gym training?

No. The category can be relevant to strength training, running, cycling, team sports and other active pursuits. The useful products differ depending on the type, duration and intensity of the activity.
